YEREVAN, April 29. / ARKA /. Galust Sahakyan, a veteran member of
the governing Republican Party of Armenia, was elected today as a
new speaker of the National Assembly (parliament).

The post was contended also by a former prime minister Hrant
Bagratyan from the opposition Armenian National Congress, who was a
    self-nominated candidate.

Galust Sahakyan was backed by 101 deputies of the 131-member
parliament. Bagratyan was endorsed by three deputies. Two ballots
