ArmInfo. The International Conference Caucasus 2009 is the 6th in
succession conference organized by the Caucasus Institute. Azerbaijani
representatives participate in it for the first time this year,
Aleksander Iskandaryan, Director of the Caucasus Institute, said at
the opening of the event on Friday.

"Like in the previous years, we received preliminary consent by
our Azerbaijani colleague and were to listen to his report on the
situation in Azerbaijani in 2009. However, he could not arrive and
informed us of that problem beforehand. In fact, our conference will
not include the report on Azerbaijan," he said. Iskandaryan emphasized
that the Azerbaijani expert did not arrive at the conference for the
personal reasons. He supposes that Azerbaijan is not represented at
the conference in Yerevan because of the domestic political situation
    in Azerbaijan.

Opening of the Caucasus 2009 International Conference opened in Yerevan
today. It will last for two days. The conference will sum up the year
2009 in the Caucasus. Participants will be scholars, journalists
and public activists from Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Turkey,
Russia and European states. Topics for discussion are the political,
social and economic development of the North and South Caucasus in
    2009; US, European, Turkish and Russian policies in the Caucasus;
regional security in the south Caucasus. The conference is a part of a
project on Building Capacity for Policy Debate in Armenia financed by
the European Union. The conference is also supported by Swiss Agency
for Development and Cooperation and the Heinrich Boll Foundation.
