About 6,000 Syrian Armenians find refuge in Armenia

- From the beginning of a military crisis in Syria about 6,000 Syrian
Armenians found refuge in Armenia, most of them acquired citizenship
in the Caucasus republic, Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan said at a
meeting with the heads of legislative, executive and judicial
authorities in the country here on Tuesday.
"The instability in the Middle East is a serious challenge for
Armenia," the president noted. "This factor was not caused only by the
Armenian diaspora in the Middle Eastern countries, despite the fact
that this is a considerable factor," he said. "The Middle East was
permanently one of the centres of world politics in strategic and
political, civilizational and cultural and religious aspects, many
events important for Armenia were directly linked with the Middle East
processes," the president stated.
"Already for two years the situation in several Middle Eastern
countries, frequently critical in political, economic and humanitarian
aspects, continues to deteriorate, posing dangerous threats not only
on regional, but also on world scale," Sargsyan went on to say. "The
dynamics of the last two years showed that the process cannot be
frequently controlled not only at domestic state level, but at
international level in many cases," the president pointed out. "Tragic
events in Syria proved it," he remarked.
"Tens of thousands of killed innocent people, hundreds of thousands of
refugees, the lack of prospect in the conflict settlement with this in
view is the reason for serious concerns," he stated. "The Syrian
people should determine their fate themselves," he said with
confidence.
"The Armenian government is keeping in the focus of its attention the
problems, which Syrian Armenians are facing," the president confirmed.
He stated with regret that "recently the number of killed and injured
people went up sharply, the Armenian church Surb Gevork (St. George)
in Haleb (Aleppo) was burnt down, many Armenian organizations were
damaged."
Many problems of Syrian Armenians "that are mainly social need urgent
solutions," the president said. He recalled that "the efforts, which
we had taken up to now, were aimed at meeting the needs of our
brothers and sisters among Syrian Armenians in Armenia and Syria."
