EU RESPECTS ARMENIA'S DECISION - MILAN CABRNOCH

    16:57 ~U 31.10.13

The European Parliament respects Armenia's decision to join
the Eurasian Customs Union and thinks of new platforms of future
cooperation, according to Milan Cabrnoch, a co-chair of the EU-Armenia
    Parliamentary Cooperation Committee.

At a news conference held jointly with his Armenian counterpart,
Samvel Farmanyan, the EU official said that members of the European
Parliament consider Armenia a key country with which they can establish
cooperation in different formats in future. He said that the Union
assists in the human rights and democracy processes in Armenia,
considering them key pillars of European values.

Mr Cabrnoch is in Armenia to attend the Committee's bureau session.

The meeting is being held in Yerevan instead of an earlier arranged
Committee session that was cancelled due to technical reasons.

The EU official highly praised his recent meetings with Armenian
officials, including with President Serzh Sargsyan, Prime Minister
Tigran Sargsyan and representatives of parliamentary factions.

As for the Eastern Partnership's upcoming summit in Vilnius
(Lithuania), Mr Cabrnoch said that they expect the Visa Facilitation
Agreement to be ratified at the meeting to ensure the Armenian
citizens' mobility and the deepening of the EU-Armenia relations on
    the interpersonal level.

The Armenian co-chair of the Committee said for his part that Yerevan
and Brussels are now conducting negotiations to elaborate future
    cooperation trends.

"There is no mutual misunderstanding between the parties. We attach
importance to dialogues and meetings which help develop a better
understanding of the sides' ideas, and move forward with the key
issue," said Farmanyan, lawmaker of the ruling Republican Party
    of Armenia.

The Committee co-chairs reiterated their commitment to continue the
future development of the EU-Armenia relations based on the past years'
    effective joint efforts.

They both agreed that it is possible to expect an essential progress
in the near future, particularly in terms of a sectoral cooperation
    (such as, the mobility agenda).

In a joint statement, the co-chairs hail the European Parliament's
decision to give a green light to the EU-Armenia visa facilitation
deal, expecting the Armenian National Assembly to react adequately
to the move before the Vilnius summit.
