ARMENIAN MP RESIGNS TO MAKE WAY FOR HIS BROTHER - PAPER

    Haykakan Zhamanak
    June 7 2008
    Armenia

Starting from yesterday [6 June] former MP Henrik Abrahamyan
([nicknamed] Jonik) is a law-breaker officially - he has violated
Article 65 of the Armenian Constitution, which states that an MP is
prohibited from engaging in entrepreneurial activities.

This fact has been recorded in an official document - the protocol on
stripping the MP of his powers, prepared by Parliament Speaker Tigran
Torosyan. Jonik's law-breaker personality has been documented so that
he could give up his majority mandate in one day. Otherwise, the MP's
resignation could have lasted for about a month. Thus, both his seat
has been vacant since yesterday and the Central Electoral Commission
has scheduled a parliamentary by-election at polling station 17 for
24 August. Candidates should be put forward at polling station 17
between 10 and 15 June. By the time reports that Jonik has vacated
his MP seat for his brother, head of President Serzh Sargsyan's staff
Hovik Abrahamyan, will be finally confirmed.
