PUBLIC POLEMICS OBSTRUCTS KARABAKH PROBLEM SETTLEMENT - LAVROV

    Russia

Public polemics in international organizations should not obstruct the
settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh problem, Russian Foreign Minister
    Sergei Lavrov said.

"What counts most at this stage is that this process should not be
obstructed, because, as soon as the rostrums of such organizations
as the United Nations and the OSCE [Organization for Security and
Co-operation in Europe] are involved, the businesslike discussion
immediately turns into public polemics," Lavrov said at a press
    conference in Moscow on Thursday.

In discussing any subject, such events do not help bring positions
closer but "only provoke the radicalization of approaches and
    antagonize the parties," he said.

"Such syndromes have so far been overcome primarily - what I have
witnessed by myself - due to the efforts by our president, who helped
the presidents of Azerbaijan and Armenia create an atmosphere that
    helps find solutions," Lavrov said.

Russia intends to continue its efforts in this direction, he said.

"We regularly inform our partners from Washington and Paris of these
efforts," Lavrov said, adding that international partners support
    Russia's efforts to this effect.

"Leaning on this support, we will try to advance somewhat further
this year than last year," he said.
