    ARMENIAN COMMUNITY OF SAINT PETERSBURG MARKS ANNIVERSARY OF SUMGAIT POGROMS

    Armenian community of Russia's Saint Petersburg marked 23 anniversary
    of the Sumgait pogroms in Azerbaijan.

    Memorial service was conducted in the church on Monday morning,
    foreign office informed Armenian News-NEWS.am. A film about Sumgait
    events was screened, while Armenian youth placed posters condemning
    the Sumgait massacres in the Nevsky Avenue.

    As a result of three-day long pogroms in the Azerbaijani city of
    Sumgait dozens of Armenians were killed, many of them - burned alive
    after beatings and torture, hundreds were wounded. Many women,
    including under-age girls, were, raped. According to official
    information, 26 Armenians were killed another 100 were seriously
    injured.
