Environmentalists protest against Armenia`s plans to build tailing dump

    July 01, 2011 | 21:59

YEREVAN. - A tailing dump will be built in the central part of Armenia
near the rivers Hrazdan and Marmarik for wastes of gold-enriching
    plant, Ekolur informs.

Existence of tailing dump in the center of Armenia is a real
catastrophe, president of Ecological academy NGO Greta Gabrielyan
states. Although the plant is not yet built the project is already
posted on the website of Armenian Ministry of Environment and Nature
Protection. Tailing dump is among the objects of the future plant.

The specialist believes the main threat is that the project has no
information on the size of the tailing dump. It is mentioned that only
close circulation of water will be employed.

`This means that it can work being overfilled. The tailing dumps are
grounded on the gravel and sand, thus all the content will penetrate
in soil and will poison the lower layers,' Gabrielyan told and added
there is no second tailing bump in case of emergency.

Another threat is dust from raw processing, which contains heavy
metals. These mixtures are typical for Armenian multi metallic ores
and will pose a real threat for the environment nearby, including
    Hrazdan city and Tsaghkadzor resort.
