ELECTION OF NEW YEREVAN MAYOR TO BE HELD WITHIN ONE MONTH

    YEREVAN

YEREVAN, October 31. /ARKA/. A new Yerevan mayor will be elected
within the next month, Arthur Gevorgyan, head of information and
public relations department of the municipality, told Novosti-Armenia
    news agency.

Yerevan mayor Karen Karapetyan confirmed last Friday his resignation,
explaining it by taking up a new job and also personal reasons.

"Under the current law, the Council of Elders (Yerevan legislature)
will elect a new mayor within one months after the resignation of
    previous mayor," said Gevorgyan.

According to him, the nomination of candidates for the vacant post are
made by factions of the Council of Elders. "Therefore, the question
of possible candidates have not yet been discussed and could not be
    discussed," he said.

The most likely candidate from the ruling Republican Party of Armenia
is Vice-Mayor Taron Margaryan, who is the son of former Prime Minister
Andranik Markarian, who died in 2007

Karen Karapetyan was elected mayor of Yerevan in 2010 December after
a former mayor Gagik Beglarian was forced to resign after beating an
official from the presidential staff. Before his appointment as mayor,
Karen Karapetyan was CEO of ArmRosGazprom natural gas distributor
owned by Russian Gazprom and the government of Armenia.
