GOVERNMENT BOOSTS SPENDING ON INSURANCE FOR CANCER AND CARDIO TREATMENT IN ARMENIA
    by Gustav Ando

    February 27, 2012

The Armenian government has pledged to boost spending on treatment and
prevention of cancer and cardiovascular diseases in order to increase
access to modern therapies, according to news agency Arka. Armenia's
Prime Minister Tigran Sargsyan made the commitment as he announced
that a new cancer treatment centre will be set up in Armenia. The
investment will be directed towards ensuring that medical insurance
includes modern treatment options for all patients, irrespective of
    their financial status.

Significance:The announcement provides a significant political
commitment to improving access to modern therapies in Armenia, although
the country continues to have a relatively backward healthcare system
with little access to new biological therapies.

Opportunities for branded manufacturers here remain relatively
niche-oriented, and while the government is seeking to expand access
to modern treatments, it is also implementing price controls as a
means of controlling cost (seeArmenia: 27 May 2010:). IHS Global
Insight expects the spending boost to drive up growth in drug sales
    and health spending going forward.
