YEZIDIS OF ARMENIA OPPOSE INCREASE OF MINIMUM AGE FOR MARRIAGES: "WE HAVE OUR OWN LAWS - OUR GIRLS MARRY AT THE AGE OF 13"

Yezidis of Armenia oppose the increase of minimum age for marriages
to 19 years for both males and females.

"We have our own laws - our girls marry at the age of 13-14. At the
age of 18 Yezidi girls are considered old maids. The new bill of the
Justice Ministry must not apply to the Yezidis as it is inadmissible
for us", says Aziz Tamoyan, Head of the Yezidi Community in Armenia.

He told media Friday that a written appeal will be addressed to Prime
Minister Tigran Sargsyan for revision of the bill and reservation for
the Yezidi community. He said that yet in the Soviet period of time
some provisions in the Family Code were not applicable to Yezidis
due to their national traditions. "Birthday is falling in Armenia
and despite that fact the government increases the minimum age for
    marriage," Tamoyan said.

Earlier, the Justice Ministry submitted a bill to the government
determining the minimum age for marriage at 19 for both male and
female. At present, in compliance with the Family Code of Armenia
the minimum age for female is 17 and for male -18.
