HIS HOLINESS ARAM I RECEIVED THE FORMER
LEBANESE AMBASSADOR TO THE US
His Holiness Aram I received the former ambassador of Lebanon to the
United States, Simon Karam, in Antelias on April 16.
The Pontiff and the former Lebanese diplomat discussed the current
political conflict in Lebanon, the willingness of the different parties to
arrive at an agreement and the confusion resulting from the various foreign
influences on the country.
The Armenian Catholicos focused in particular on the economic hardship
prevalent in Lebanon and the ways to overcome the unavoidable poverty
resulting from unemployment. He emphasized that an agreement centered on
Lebanon's chief political interests is the only way out, adding that these
interests should be considered above all individual and party interests.
Simon Karam had also met Patriarch Sfeir the same day and discussed with
both of the spiritual Heads the plan of a Christian initiative to bring
Lebanon out of its current conflict.
