Representatives of a number of non-governmental organizations (NGOs)
raised a protest demanding closure of the Metsamor nuclear power
    plant in Armenia.

As Anatolia news agency informs, the main purpose of the Turkish
NGO representatives, gathered in the eastern Turkish city of Igdir,
was to draw the world community's attention to hazards of nuclear
power plants. Speaking on behalf of the protestors, The Association
of Health Workers For Peace and Environment Against Nuclear Jeopardy
secretary-general, Derman Boztokm said, "Armenian power plant should
be shut down, since whole eastern and southeastern Asia would be
affected in case of an accident at the Metsamor nuclear power plant".

To note, Armenian nuclear power plant is only 16 kilometers away from
the Turkish border. Turkish representatives systematically raise
protest against ANPP requiring its closure and making "statements"
about leakages at the plant, which they disprove themselves later. Thus
in May 2007 the Turkish Nuclear- power Agency disproved the information
about a radiation leak at the Metsamor nuclear power plant, which was
disseminated in Turkish mass media. In their interview with the Turkish
newspaper "Zaman", official personalities of the Turkish nuclear
power structure said "the analysis of radiation level measurement
in the region proves that the radiation level does not exceed the
    permissible rates".
