Nagorno-Karabakh conflict cannot be resolved in military way - Lavrov
The conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan over Nagorno-Karabakh
cannot be resolved through the use of force, Russian Foreign Minister
Sergei Lavrov has said.
"I am convinced that the Karabakh conflict has no military solution,"
Lavrov said at a press conference in Moscow on Wednesday.
"All the efforts that the international community, represented by the
Minsk Group co-chairmen from Russia, France, and the U.S., is making
to provide the parties with assistance in looking for a mutually
acceptable solution, rule out a military way in resolving the
conflict," he said.
During a meeting between the OSCE Minsk Group co-chairmen and the
Armenian and Azeri foreign ministers in Madrid, the conflicting
parties were told that, among the crucial elements of the common
position on the issue was "unacceptability of military solutions and
a call for avoiding any steps, actions, or statements that allow for
such a possibility," he said.
Asked by journalists to comment on Baku's reported remarks suggesting
that military force could be used to resolve the conflict, Lavrov
replied, "I haven't heard anything that could be described as the
Azeri top leadership's calls for resolving the conflict in a military
way. Discussions in various formats are held from time to time to see
how progress could be achieved in settling the conflict." va dp
