ARMENIA HAS 3,532 PRISON POPULATION
YEREVAN, DECEMBER 5, ARMENPRESS: An official of the
Armenian justice ministry said there are now 3,532
convicts and detainees in 12 prisons, run by the
penitentiary system of the ministry.
Arsen Babayan, a spokesman for penitentiary
department of the ministry, said their number has
grown by almost 200 since last May.
Some 125 are women and 56 are juveniles who are in
Abovian prison. He said 48 convicts are citizens of
other former Soviet republics and 16 are from other
countries.
Seventy-seven are sentenced to life in prison.
