  • Radikal: Explanation of word "Armenian" in Turkish Dictionary Racist

RADIKAL QUALIFIES AS RACIST EXPLANATION OF "ARMENIAN" WORD IN TURKISH
    DICTIONARY

ANKARA, FEBRUARY 1, NOYAN TAPAN. The following explanation: "People
living in Armenia or come of that people" is given before the word
"Armenian" in the "Explanatory Dictionary of Modern Turkish" published
by the Turkish Linguistic Association. After this explanation, as an
example connected with the "Armenian" word the following expression
"To make difficulties (give oneself air) like an Armenian's
daugther-in-law" is written which is explained in the following way
    "To move hardly and slowly."

And just in the same dictionary, in front of the "Turk" word the
following explanation is written: "1.People living within the borders
of the Republic of Turkey or come from that people. 2. Nation living
in different parts of the world, speaking in different dialects of
Turkish or come from that nation." And as an example connected with
the "Turk" word the following examples are written: "What a happiness
that I am Turkish" words of Ataturk, and "I am a Turkish whose
religion and nation are noble" words of Yurdakul.

On the previous day Radikal qualified as racist the explanation of the
word "Armenian" in the dictionary. According to Milliyet, responding
this insistence, Chairman of the Turkish Linguistic Association
Professor Sukru Haluk Akalin mentioned that there are no racist
expressions in their dictionary, and there is no insult addressed to
Armenians in the explanation written in front of the word "Armenian"
and in the example connected with it. He at the same time said: "In
opposite to all these, there are a number of expressions in Armenia in
which there are insults addressed to Turks, for example "Do not be
afraid of dog, be afraid of Turk," "Turk's whelp," "Turk's boy" etc.
