WE DO NOT WANT SPEECHES, WE DEMAND CONCRETE ACTIONS

    01-02 -2007

The Armenian Cypriot community has been mobilised to save the Melkonian
School after the ruling of the Cyprus Supreme Court in favour of AGBU.

The community demands from the Government to take its responsibility
and save MEI, pointing that the Supreme Court decision opens the
doors to AGBU to fulfil its objective, which is nothing less then
selling the historic school/land of the Armenian community.

Through a letter signed by Mr. Vartkes Mahdessian, Representative of
the Armenian Community and Archbishop Varoujan Herkelian the community
demands from the government to save MEI, they also demand explanations
from the Cyprus General attorney, in how the Supreme Court ruled that
MEI is not a "Historic Heritage".

The letter which has also been sent to all political parties and to
the President of the Supreme Court, expresses the frustration and
disappointment of the community, especially towards the President of
    the Supreme Court.

The community also demands from all political parties to take a firm
stance and reminds them the 2004 Parliamentary declaration which
condemned the closing of the school and described the AGBU decision as
    "An act of an Enemy".

"We do not want speeches, we demand concrete actions".

Finally the community states that it will not hesitate to take this
matter to the European Court of Justice, even if this will give
    political dimensions to the problem.
