Azeri official says Armenia cannot join Trans-Caspian gas project

    Azad Azarbaycan TV, Baku
    9 Feb 07

A senior Azerbaijani official has ruled out Armenia's participation
in the Trans-Caspian gas pipeline project.

In remarks to commercial Azad Azarbaycan TV, Novruz Mammadov, head of
the foreign relations department at the Azerbaijani presidential
administration, described as "paradoxical" Armenian Foreign Minister
Vardan Oskanyan's remarks that Armenia may join the Trans-Caspian gas
pipeline. "This sounds paradoxical... Under the current
circumstances, Armenia can in no way be involved in a project that is
being implemented by Azerbaijan, a state that carries weight in the
    region," Mammadov said.

He also dismissed remarks made by Armenian officials that they could
    impede the Kars-Akhalkalaki-Tbilisi-Baku railway project.

"That is a very incorrect path and unfortunately, the Armenian people
still agree with their leaders' moves. Armenians thought they had
made an important move. But they again made a big mistake. The
mistake is that they cannot realize that Azerbaijan carries weight in
    the region," Mammadov added.

The Trans-Caspian gas pipeline project aims to take Turkmen gas to
Turkey and Europe via the Caspian Sea.
