    Feb 12 2007

YEREVAN, FEBRUARY 12, NOYAN TAPAN. A cooperation agreement was
signed on February 8 between the UN Development Programme (UNDP)
and RA Ombudsman's Office. According to the agreement, an education
program on the human rights protection will be implemented in
Armenia. As RA Ombudsman Armen Haroutiunian mentioned, one of the
main components of the program is the actions addressed to increase
of public awareness. Particularly, a series of theme programmes will
be prepared and broadcast by the Public Television. The most important
issues relating to the human rights in Armenia will be presented during
the series of broadcasts. "Owing to the TV broadcasts envisaged by the
program, the Ombudsman will get possibility to increase transparence of
the institution," A.Haroutiunian emphasized. He expressed a confidence
that similar actions may increase the level of the society's awareness
about their rights and form a culture stimulating the human rights. In
the words of Consuelo Vidal, the head of the UN and UNDP Office
in Armenia, everything possible will be done among the population,
including the farthest villages, to raise the level of awareness about
the human rights. The total cost of the program is 500 thousand U.S.
dollars which will be given by the UNDP, UN Swedish Agency for
International Development and the RA Government. Technical assistance
and equipment will be given to the documentary center of the RA
Ombudsman's Office within the framework of the program.
