On Friday, Commander of the Ground Forces General of the Army, Alexei
Maslov, stated that the withdrawal of military bases from Georgia would
not weaken the Russian forces in the Caucasus. Maslov explained:
"These bases, with an aggregate strength of 1,800 servicemen,
were actually blocked from all sides by the unfriendly attitude
of the Georgian authorities and that is why they could not fulfill
their tasks." According to the general, it would be impossible to
reinforce the bases with personnel and supply them with materiel if
necessary. Maslov concluded that heavy armament and hardware of the
62nd military base in Akhalkalaki was evacuated to Russia and to the
102nd base in Gyumri (Armenia).
