DAVID SHAHNAZARIAN IS CONVINCED THAT ROBERT KOCHARIAN WILL MAKE AN ATTEMPT TO BE A CANDIDATE FOR PRESIDENCY FOR THIRD TIME

    Jun 06 2007

YEREVAN, JUNE 6, NOYAN TAPAN. "Today the internal problem of Armenia is
not the authorities, but the opposition, the activity of which reached
deadlock." David Shahnazarian, Head of Consent Center, expressed such
opinion at the June 6 discussion dedicated to problems of home and
    foreign policy of Armenia.

In his words, the structure, which exists in the political sphere
and first of all in the opposition sphere, cannot solve the problems
    faced by the country.

"Instead of power's acting within the limits the opposition would
dictate, the opposite thing happened," D. Shahnazarian said adding
that the opposition went to the elections in the dispersed way,
    because the authorities wished this.

He said that in the recent years many flaws characteristic of the
authorities move to the opposition sphere. In particular, the fact
that the opposition, as well the authorities are not transparent
for the public. "And isn't there corruption within the opposition,
we know well that there is and if the opposition goes on like this,
I will speak about these issues with concrete facts."

As D. Shahnazarian affirmed, Robert Kocharian will make an attempt
to be a candidate for presidency for the third time and it is obvious
that ARFD's candidate is the very Kocharian. "If someone thinks that
Kocharian does not plan to be a candidate for the third time, he is
    sadly mistaken."

In D. Shahnazarian's words, under these conditions the opposition
should unite according to ideology. Thus, on the other hand, liberal
forces should unite: Armenian National Movement, Alternative and
Hanrapetutiun party and on the other hand, social-democrats should
unite. In his opinion, it is necessary that these two big forces
elect their leaders, one of which will struggle for the presiden's
    post in the future.

To recap, the discussion was organized by the Analytical Center for
Globalization and Regional Cooperation with the support of Ebert Fund.
