SEMINAR FOR JOURNALISTS ON COVERAGE OF STATISTICAL DATA IN HEALTHCARE
    HELD IN YEREVAN

YEREVAN, June 8. /ARKA/. The seminar for journalists on coverage of
statistical data in healthcare was held in Yerevan.
The aim of the seminar is to give journalists the required
information on how to cover medical news in comprehensible way, the
Armenian Deputy Minister of Healthcare Tatul Hakobian. "Analysis of
the level of demography and healthcare issues in Armenia in 2005" was
taken as a basis for the seminar.
Regardless of a journalist's perception of the information the latter
should be communicated to people in an objective form," Hakobian
    said.
Addressing the impact of statistical data on the public life Hakobian
pointed out that journalists should be particularly careful in
communicating information of human health, particularly on spread of
diseases or change in mortality rate.
As a results of "Analysis of level of demography and healthcare
issues in Armenia in 2005" a comprehensive database was set up to be
used by Armenia's National Statistical Service, ministries and other
governmental agencies. Thus, specialists and employees of many
governmental agencies will have sound basis for conducting
comprehensive analyses and scientific research in the spheres of
healthcare and sociology, Hakobian said. In this respect he pointed
out that Armenia's National Statistical Service needs alternative
analyses, reconciliation of results with own official data to ensure
the accuracy. "The results of the analysis showed that the data of
Armenia's National Statistical Service represent the facts," he said.

"Analysis of the level of demography and healthcare issues in Armenia
in 2005" was carried out in Armenia in September-December 2005 by the
employees of the Healthcare Ministry and Armenia's National
Statistical Service under financial support of USAID. The poll
covered 6,707 households of the country or 6,566 women, 1,447 men and
1,293 children in Yerevan and all 10 marzes of Armenia
The analysis provides data on birth rate and infant mortality, family
planning and use of contraceptives, level of infant and woman
nutrition, rights of women etc. N.V. -0--
