RICHARD HOAGLAND MAY ENTER UPON HIS DUTIES OF NEW US AMBASSADOR TO ARMENIA IN AUGUST

Richard Hoagland has an excellent opportunity to be appointed US
Ambassador to Armenia by the Bush Administration this summer when the
Congress takes a recess in August, the Deputy Director of the Russia
and Eurasia program at the Center for Strategic and International
Studies, Cory Welt, told ArmInfo correspondent.

According to him, the main conflict is the reason why Hoagland's
nomination was blocked by the Congress, and it is connected with
the demand to recognize the fact of the Armenian Genocide in Ottoman
Turkey. However, this demand, which may be placed on each candidate
for US Ambassador to Armenia, can't be satisfied as the Administration
will be careful that the position of the candidate for the post of
the head of diplomatic mission coincides with the position of the
US Government in this matter, C.Welt said. After all, in order to
prevent a collision between two principles, one should consider
the appointment of ambassador to the republic and the recognition
of the Armenian Genocide separately, the US analyst said. For this
part, speaking of the possibility that the US Congress won't approve
Hoagland's candidacy even after he is appointed Ambassador to Armenia,
Richard Kirakosian, an expert of the Analytical Centre on defence
and security issues Jane's Information Group Washington, noted that
the history of US diplomacy the Congress has never failed to approve
diplomats, moreover, such professional ones as Richard Hoagland.
