EXPERTS SEE NO PERIL OF NUKE REACTOR

    Daily Georgian Times, Georgia

    June 15 2007

Georgian experts see no danger in the construction of a nuclear
reactor in Georgia, ruling out the possibility of the Chernobyl like
catastrophe. They say the modern technologies guarantee top security
    of the nuclear stations.

'The system itself will not allow you to cause a catastrophe. This
means that the station is absolutely safe, unless you explode
or destruct it on purpose. I was very glad when I heard the news
about the construction of the station in Georgia. The country should
finally live the row of underdeveloped states,' Expert of physics
    Shukri Abramidze told Rustavi2.

Deputy Director of the Institute of Physics, Zaza Rostomashvili has
the same view of the issue. He says even in Chernobyl the breakdown
was caused in fact artificially. It was discovered afterwards that
it was the personnel's fault, who wanted to make an experiment and
switched off some device. The catastrophe there was in fact caused
    intentionally.

Politicians have a different position on the issue. Part of them
believes that there is no need of building nuclear reactor so closely
with the one in Armenia, because the distance is too short. Others
say such issues should be decided after considering public opinion
    and experts' conclusions.
