"OYP IS ALWAYS FOR IDEA OF TAKING PART IN PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS WITH ONE COMMON CANDIDATE," MHER SHAHGELDIAN SAYS

YEREVAN, JUNE 20, NOYAN TAPAN. The participation of the opposition
with one common candidate in the 2008 presidential elections will mean
political "awakening." This statement was made by Mher Shahgeldian,
an deputy in the RA National Assembly, the Vice-Chairman of the Orinats
Yerkir (Country of Law) party, at the June 20 press conference. In his
opinion, the Orinats Yerkir (Country of Law) party has always been for
the idea of taking part in the elections with one common candidate. At
the same time Mher Shahgeldian mentioned that Artur Baghdasarian,
the head of the Country of Law party, is highly respected both in
Armenia, and abroad.
Commenting on the fact of Samvel Farmanian's, the Chairman of the
Youth Union of the party, leaving the Orinats Yerkir party a week
ago, the Vice-Chairman of the OYP mentioned that they have always
respected the young personnel but it soon turned out that some of
them had their own strivings.
In the opinion of the Vice-Chairman of the Orinats Yerkir party,
S. Farmanian wanted to become an MP but he failed and that is the
very reason for which he left the party. M. Shahgeldian believes
that the phenomenon of "opportunity worship" exists in the internal
political field of Armenia. "We just should see with whom and where
we are going," he said.
Mher Shahgeldian refuted the information concerning the Sergei
Abrahamian's, the NA MP by the OYP proportional roll (the brother of
the Chairman of the World Armenian Congress and Union of Armenians
in Russia), intention of leaving the party.
M. Shahgeldian declared that the meeting of the OYP and Zharangutiun
(Heritage) factions took place a few days ago. In M. Shahgeldian's
words, the voice of the opposition "should sound loud" in the home
political field of the country and, particularly, in the parliament,
and they will cooperate with Zharangutiun (Heritage) within that
context.
