MAYOR OF SAN FRANCISCO CALLS NANCY PELOSI FOR ADOPTING RESOLUTION ON ARMENIAN GENOCIDE

    Noyan Tapan
    Jun 25 2007

SAN FRANCISCO, JUNE 25, NOYAN TAPAN. Gavin Newsom, the Mayor of
San Francisco, sent a letter to Nancy Pelosi, the Speaker of the
U.S. House of Representatives, calling for supporting the adoption
of Resolution 106 on the Armenian Genocide: "I am writing to you on
the occasion of Resolution 106, the adoption of which will contribute
to the official recognition of the Armenian Genocide. I am joining
the great and active Armenian community in San Francisco and it is
a great honour for me to add my name to the growing number of the
supporters of Resolution 106," the Mayor of San Francisco mentioned.

According to the information provided by the Armenian National
Committee of America, in his letter Newsom also referred to the murder
of Hrant Dink, the former editor-in-chief of the Weekly "Agos",
and said: "Dink was silenced as he was struggling for the adoption
of the Armenian Genocide in Turkey."

"There is no better way to honour the memory of Hrant Dink than to
apply to the House of Representatives, calling for the adoption of
    the resolution," the mayor said.

Gavin Newsom was appointed as member of the Board of Supervisors in San
Francisco, and in 2004 he was elected mayor of San Francisco. G. Newsom
has always provided assistance to the Armenian community.
