YEREVAN, MARCH 1, NOYAN TAPAN - ARMENIANS TODAY. "U.S. President
George Bush has long been doing his best to support Ankara in the
issue of joining European Union. He takes this step as Turkey is a
strong country in NATO's staff.
But my position differs from Bush's position. I declare that Turkey
is not a European country, it is not absolutely ready to enter into
Europe. Turkey is an Asian country." French Interior Minister Nicolas
Sarkozy, who is a candidate of right-sided People's Movement union
for presidential elections to be held in April, declared this.
According to the Hurriyet Turkish daily, during his meeting with
journalists Sarkozy expressed his positions over a number of regional
and international issues. Sarkozy expressed opposition to European
Union's extension, which, in his words, can be implemented without
control. "We need a Europe that will conduct a strong policy,"
he emphasized.
