NDU DISCONTENT WITH PROSPECT OF RECEIVING A FEW MANDATES IN FUTURE
    PARLIAMENT

YEREVAN, MARCH 9, NOYAN TAPAN. The National Democratic Union (NDU) is
not taking part in the parliamentary elections, as by receiving a few
mandates they will not be able to change the situation formed in the
country. Party Chairman Vazgen Manukian declared this at the March 9
press conference. In his words, NDU will continue struggling, but not
in the parliament. "The problem will not be solved only with
consolidation of political forces: one should consolidate different
strata of society around some idea and we will do this," V. Manukian
said. As he affirmed, participation of 28 political forces in the
elections is very beneficial for the authorities as they can give the
possibility to 15 opposition parties to receive 3% votes each, after
which of none of them will pass to the parliament and these votes will
be distributed among ARFD, Bargavach Hayastan and RPA. "We do not wish
to take part in that game, but we will assist the people we trust,"
    V. Manukian declared. In his words, NDU will support PPA,
Hanrapetutiun (Republic), Zharangutiun (Heritage), Dashink (Alliance)
parties during the elections. He also confirmed information about
negotiations with ANM and further cooperation between them. In the
words of NDU Chairman, the party will also support the candidature of
Samvel Babayan, Chairman of Dashink Party, former Commander of NKR
Defence Army nominated by majoritarian system. In V. Manukian's words,
the reason is not only his personal intimacy with S. Babayan and the
joint martial way they have passed, but also the curcumstance that the
brother of RA Defence Minister Serge Sargsian has also nominated his
candidature at the same electoral district. Answering journalists'
questions, V. Manukian said that he will nominate his candidature at
the 2008 presidential elections. He did not agree to the opinion,
according to which if the authorities receive majority of seats at the
parliament, the results of the presidential elections will be
    predetermined.
