CIRCUMSTANCE OF NICOLAS SARKOZY'S BEING ELECTED PRESIDENT OF FRANCE IS SERIOUS BLOW FOR TURKEY, ARMENIAN POLITICIAN SAYS

    May 08 2007

YEREVAN, MAY 8, NOYAN TAPAN. The circumstance of Nikolas Sarkozy's
being elected on the post of the President of France is a serious
blow for Turkey as the latter stated many times that if he is
elected, Turkey will not become a European Union member during his
officiating. Politician Levon Melik-Shahnazarian stated about it at
the May 8 press conference. In his words, the newly-elected President
of France will continue policy of his predecessor, Jacques Chirac,
in the issue of having good relations with Armenians.

Touching upon the parliamentary elections to take place in Turkey, L.
Melik-Shahnazarian mentioned that a political crisis exists there. In
his words, "Not wordly and Mohammedan forces clashed in Turkey, but
malicious and more malicious forces clashed." L. Melik-Shahnazarian
mentioned that "if servicemen, that's Panturkists, come to power
in Turkey, assistance to Azerbaijan will be much more." So, in his
words, the smallest among evils, Islamic Turkey, is more advantageous
    for Armenia.

In L. Melik-Shahnazarian's words, in the political sense "a very hot
summer" will be in Turkey and it is possible that no parliamentary
by-elections are held on July 22. "Great changes, clashes are expected
in Turkey and it is even possible that blood is shed," he said.
