IN ARMEN ASHOTIAN'S WORDS, LEGITIMACY OF PARLIAMENTARY ELECTIONS DOES NOT GIVE RISE TO DOUBTS FOR ANYBODY

    May 21 2007

YEREVAN, MAY 21, NOYAN TAPAN. The political elite of Armenia displayed
will at the May 12 parliamentary elections what was expressed by
mobilization of the whole state apparatus. Armen Ashotian, a Council
member of the Republic Party of Armenia made such a statement at
the May 21 press conference. In his words, just owing to that will
"there is no doubt today among the society concerning legitimacy of
the new parliament." At present, as A. Ashotian mentioned, Armenia
is "at the last stage of transit democracy," from which the country
may be pushed out because of political adventure or muddle-headed
    inner-political processes.

Touching upon the mass meetings organized by the Impeachment alliance,
Hanrapetutiun (Republic) and Nor Zhamanakner (New Times) parties,
    A. Ashotian mentioned that he qualified mass actions of those forces as
a "struggle for existence for the opposition." In his opinion, today
a number of parties appeared out of the parliament stand before the
problem of keeping their pre-electoral activeness. In the RPA Council
member's words, those parties must unite and grow bigger for it.

    A. Ashotian advised not to consider the shots fired in Gyumri at the
night of May 21 as a result of a political conflict and wait until
the legal bodies will make public their conclusion.
