WORK ON IMPROVEMENT OF LEGISLATIVE FIELD ON TRANSPLANTATION TO BE COMPLETED BY LATE 2007

    Noyan Tapan
    May 24 2007

YEREVAN, MAY 24, NOYAN TAPAN. The RA Law on Transplantation of Human
Organs and Tissues forbids the use of organs of dead persons for the
purpose of transplantation. For this reason, in Armenia it is relatives
of patients who mainly become donors in case of transplantation.

Suren Krmoyan, legal advisor to the RA minister of health, told NT
correspondent that with the aim of eliminating the shortcomings in
the law which was adopted in 2003, work on its amendment is being
done now. In particilar, experience of other countries is being
examined. For example, according to the Russian law, organs of a dead
person may be used in case of a written consent that this person gave
before his death. In some countries, the law allows to use organs of
a dead person if the given person did not forbid this in writing.

    S. Krmoyan said that as a result of studies, the correct option to
fill up this gap will be chosen.

In his words, one of the priority tasks of the ministry is to complete
the work on improvement of the transplantation-related legislative
field by the end of this year. He noted that the Armenian government
has approved the list of human organs and/or tissues subject to
transplantation, as well as the order of their import.
