Interview with literary critic Avik Isahakyan
"Mr. Isahakyan, we still remember the active motion of Levon
Ter-Petrosyan and his team-members who entered the political reality
around two months back. If we try to call literature to mind, where
can we find the "reflection" of all this. Which author and especially
what novel do the appearance of the ex-President remind you?"
" I lecture world literature in "Acharyan University". My favorite
author is Albert Kamue, who has a very genius novel "Plague". The
novel tells us how the epidemic of plague suddenly breaks out in a
very peaceful city. The city is destroyed, water is poisoned, the
city is in blockade, they betray one another for a peace of bread,
people belonging to different classes fight with one another. Those
who want to fight this epidemic are persecuted and imprisoned.
And it was during this human misery, and psychological crises that
the city faces such phenomena that has never seen before. Because
before they were guided by dignity, they were more concerned about
the benefit of their motherland rather than their own interests.
And suddenly the epidemic turned everything upside down. As we know
during the plague first of all rats become very active. And it is
well known that if you don't manage to avert epidemic, the latter
will harm you. And that epidemic has a very bad quality, if you don't
avert it immediately it will repeat itself every 10 years.
Here is where our people must display wisdom and beware of plaque
epidemic. Because unlike natural disasters (storm, flood, tsunami,
etc), the epidemic starts when your goals are dirty, when greediness
is evident. I mean the greediness of power, capturing and recapturing
positions."
"But the representatives of the ex-authorities and the powers attached
state that there is a "public demand" for the ex-President."
" I can't understand one thing, how can the epidemic of plague
be demanded. We still face the impact of 1991 - 1998 plague. That
epidemic forced hundreds and thousands of people to leave the country,
because of the cold and dark years. Our children used to faint during
the lessons at school because of lack of food. The psychology of the
new generation is spoiled. I don't think that whole nation suffers
from amnesia. A person who has borne independence, as his own destiny
must understand that he can't yield to the foreign powers any more.
Today I notice that the same epidemic jeopardizes the city and many
man-rats have become active. We have 15 years independence and we
must really be able to call all that happened during those 15 years
by their names. I have already said this and I will repeat that after
coming to power in 1998 the first thing to do for the new government
must have been to give political evaluation to the former government
- the organizers of the epidemic. In that case they would have never
dared to rise again and to shake the ship of our statehood, causing
happiness to our century-old enemies."
"How can a person, who calls his state " a state of chieftains"
think about the peaceful progress of the "ship?"
" Only a person for whom the authority, name and dignity of his state
is of no importance can call his state " a state of chieftains". His
only goal is to destroy the state system, the country, something that
he has already done. But this time he won't manage.
They think that people have problems with their memory. No! We can
never forget the Genocide of 1915, nor the slaughter organized by
the Turks in Nakhijevan, Karabakh, nor the epidemic of 1991-98.
In his last speech the ex-President proudly published the names
of those who resigned with him. Everyone knows how guilty are all
those mentioned by the ex-President. That is why it would be better
for them to feel shame and speak about their own scenes, instead of
labeling others.
It seemed after resigning in 1998 Levon Ter-Petrosyan would never
appear again. Especially because before that he wrote his "famous"
article "War or Peace?"
But it came clear that the former ones feel discomfort because they
didn't manage to cede Karabakh. Today they returned and are saying
the same. Moreover they warn us that Azerbaijan has oil, they are
becoming richer and richer, that they have tough attitude and will
never agree to concessions. What should we cede - the land that we
gained with blood? Are you the one who liberated those lands? It is
the people that liberated these lands and they are the owners of it.
The same approach is towards the recognition of the Genocide. If we
listen to the former ones we must immediately remove this issue from
the agenda of our foreign policy. That is to say - we must become
slaves and don't even dare to utter a word about this issue.
If you are not after the solution of your national issues, then who
will respect you as a state and nation."
