INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE DEDICATED TO 40th ANNIVERSARY OF MEMORIAL COMPLEX OF ARMENIAN GENOCIDE VICTIMS OPENS IN YEREVAN

YEREVAN, NOVEMBER 27, NOYAN TAPAN. The Tsitsernakaberd Memorial Complex
of Armenian Genocide victims is a memorial of one of the worst crimes
in history, memorial of millions of victims of the first genocide of
the 20th century. It is also a memorial of people's memory. Tigran
Torosian, the RA National Assembly Speaker, stated on November 27,
at the international conference dedicated to the 40th anniversary of
the Memorial Complex of Armenian Genocide victims.
According to him, unfortunately, it took about four decades after those
tragic events until the memorial was built as a result of people's
anger and indignation. "It showed that people's memory is immortal. I
am convinced that this memorial is also called up to remind to many
people that their efforts to overestimate everyday political interests
against the most important human values are vain, as this memorial
showed that finally everybody will have to admit the historic facts."
The NA Speaker said that the memorial also has a very important
meaning: it symbolizes two important ideas: bending before memory
and at the same time revival and development. He stressed that the
construction of the Memorial Complex became possible thanks to efforts
of many people: thanks to those who in 1965 rose to protest against
the attitude to the Genocide existing before, those who "mixed their
sweat with cement," and certainly, thanks to the Armenian leadership
of that time.
It should be mentioned that the conference has been organized by the
Museum-Institute of Armenian Genocide of the RA National Academy of
Sciences. Scientists from a number of countries, including Germany,
Great Britain, Russia, Japan, and other countries take part in the
event. The conference will continue on November 28.
