Paris, 10 Oct. (AKI) - France, a former colonial power often divided
by the issue of immigration, is opening a new museum to celebrate
the contribution of its many newcomers.

The History of Immigration Museum on Wednesday opened its doors but
visitors will be able to visit the museum free of charge on Sunday.

The museum is housed in the Art Deco-inspired Palais de la Porte
Doree, in Paris's 12th arrondissement district - where the first
members of the city's immigrant community arrived at the beginning
    of the last century.

Visitors will be able to view the museum's permanent exhibition
'Landmarks' which contains archive documents, images, art works. It
will also contain visual and verbal testimonies which chart the
role played by immigrants in France's economic social and cultural
    development.

"It puts in perspective shared and individual histories and offers
a unique opportunity to learn about 200 years of immigration from a
totally new perspective," the museum said in a statement.

A forthcoming exhibition,'Reconstructing the nation: Armenian refugees
in the Middle East and France 1917-1945' will be on show at the museum
    from 16 October-11 January.

A major exhibition, 'Foreigners in the Colonial Era', is due to be
held at the museum from May to November next year.
