Eldar Safarov: Russia's low-priced arms sales to Armenia will
increase tension in the South Caucasus

    [ 12 Oct 2007 11:56 ]

`Armenia continues to hide weapon procurement from the UN Register of
Conventional Arms and deploy most of the weapons in Azerbaijan's
territory under occupation,' lieutenant-colonel Eldar Safarov, press
officer of the Defense Ministry of Azerbaijan, told APA.

He added that the issue has been raised vis-à-vis the United Nations
and Armenia was listed as a country not reporting to UN Register of
    Conventional Arms.
`We have several times informed international organizations of this
issue. Armenia hides information about procurement of weapons and
this shows once more that Armenia inclines to armament,' he added.
Safarov noted that Russia takes active part in arming Armenia.
`Offering weapons and military hardware withdrawn from Georgia to
Armenia's disposal is violation of European arms treaty and has
accelerated tension in the regions. Russia's low-priced arms sales to
Collective Security Treaty Organization members, including Armenia
will further increase the tension in this region,' he noted. /APA/
