  • ANKARA: Passage Of The Armenian Bill In Washington Looking Less Cert

PASSAGE OF THE ARMENIAN BILL IN WASHINGTON LOOKING LESS CERTAIN THIS WEEK

    Hurriyet, turkey
    Oct 18 2007

While heavy diplomatic traffic between Ankara and Washington, DC
continues on the matter of the Armenian bill accepted last week by
the House of Representatives' Foreign Affairs committee, signals
from the US capital indicate that support may be waning for passage
    of the controversial resolution.

Though House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has signalled her strong support for
the bill, which backs Armenian allegations of genocide at the hands of
the Ottoman Empire, she has for the first time this week noted that
the passage of the bill is "not certain." 12 congresspeople from the
US House of Representatives have recently pulled their support away
from the resolution, while President George W. Bush has telephoned
Pelosi to urge her not to bring the resolution up for voting on the
    floor of the House.
