P. HAIRIKIAN: "I WILL BE EVEN READY TO SUPPORT THE CANDIDACY OF SERJ SARGSIAN, IF HE ACCEPTS MY PROJECT OF MAKING ARMENIA A DEMOCRATIC COUNTRY"

On August 28, leaders of seven parties National Self-Determination
Union, National Solidarity, the People's Party of Armenia, the Orinats
Yerkir Party, the Social Democratic Hnchak Party, the Democratic Way
Party and the National Democratic Party met at the Congress Hotel,
said the leader of the National Self-Determination Union Paruyr
Hairikian in a news conference at the "Hayatsk" club.
The formal leader of the Heritage Party Vardan Khachatrian was denied
to participate at the meeting, as the real leader of the party is
Raffi Hovhannisian.
"They should have informed beforehand that Vardan Khachatrian is in
charge of these issues", mentioned Paruyr Hairikian.
According to him, he does not know why the head of the All-Armenian
Movement's board Ararat Zurabian missed the meeting, although Hairikian
said Zurabian told one of the newspapers he was going away and had to
miss the meeting. Aram Gaspar Sargsian did not take part both because
he has gone away too and will return on August 31. As to Aram Zaven
Sargsian, according to the media he was against that meeting. Paruyr
Hairikian qualified "freaky" that kind of approach of a politician
who refused to meet his colleagues.
Nevertheless, Paruyr Hairikian did not think Aram Zaven Sargsian
held such an approach. According to him, the reporters distorted Aram
Zaven Sargsian's words.
The leader of the National Self-Determination Union stated he would
not like the meetings he initiated to be referred to as meetings of
the opposition.
According to him, those are meetings of democratic forces and are not
confidential, and reporters are not invited because some participants
fear distorted reporting. Nevertheless, when Paruyr Hairikian said the
meetings were not confidential, he declined to say who had proposed
inviting pro-government parties to the next meetings. The efforts
of the reporters to get the name of the author of the proposal were
in vain.
Hairikian declined to mention the name. He advised the reporters to
ask each of the other participants separately.
As to information that concerns him only, he said he proposed the core
project of making Armenia the most democratic country of the world. If
the political forces come together around this axis, Paruyr Hairikian
will think it is not pointless to run in the presidential election,
even if he does not run in the election, he can support another
leader. Otherwise, the leader of the National Self-Determination
Union says he will not participate in a "brawl".
"My goal is to make Armenia a democratic county", underlined
Paruyr Hairikian. In answer to the question if he may support Levon
Ter-Petrosyan, Paruyr Hairikian said, "I am not interested in persons,
and if Serj Sargsian accepts my project, I am ready to support his
candidacy".
