COUNCIL OF ARMENIAN PUBLIC ORGANIZATIONS DEMANDS TO CONFER STATUS OF REGIONAL LANGUAGE TO ARMENIAN

    Prime News Agency, Georgia
    Sept 25 2007

Tbilisi. September 25 (Prime-News) - The Council of Armenian Public
Organizations of Samtskhe-Javakheti and Kvemo Kartli demands to confer
the status of regional language to the Armenian language.

The Council plans to send an appropriate appeal on the above-mentioned
issue to Mikheil Saakashvili, President of Georgia.

Davit Rastagian, the leader of the organization "Virki", declares
that they want to retain their national identity, as the government
of Georgia does not allow them to use the Armenian language.

Artur Porosian, one of the members of "Unified Javakheti", admitted
that the territorial division of Georgia ought to be altered and
Georgia ought to become federal state.

The aforementioned meeting was held within the framework of the
program on "Negotiation of Existing Information Vacuum in Relation to
Samtskhe-Javakheti Region" for Georgian, Armenian and Azeri journalists
implemented by NGO "Institute for War and Peace Reporting" and OSCE
    mission to Georgia.

Three Azeri, two Armenian and six Georgian journalists participated
    in five-day program.

The participants of the program held meetings with representatives
    of NGO and governmental forces.
