VAZGEN MANUKIAN: I WILL RUN FOR PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS ONLY FOR WINNING

YEREVAN, SEPTEMBER 27, NOYAN TAPAN. "I will run for the 2008
presidential elections only for winning," Vazgen Manukian, the Chairman
of the National Democratic Union, stated in his September 27 meeting
with journalists. According to him, if there were no variant of
winning, "it would be no use taking part in the game."
V. Manukian also said that among probable candidates there is no one,
for whom he would refuse to be a candidate for the elections in order
to support him. And the goal of NDU's coming to power, according to
him, is not only power shift, but creation of a power system, which
"for sure will be better than the current one."
In connection with the settlement of the Nagorno Karabakh conflict
V. Manukian gave assurance that this issue should be solved through
compromises, as a result of which, however, Karabakh's return
to Azerbaijan will be excluded. According to the NDU leader, only
Armenia's strengthening can force Azerbaijan to make compromises. At
the same time, V. Manukian said that by saying "state's strengthening"
he does not mean only the army.
