NATIONAL PARK "ARPI LICH" TO BE CREATED IN ARMENIA

    Noyan Tapan
    Jan 25, 2008

YEREVAN, JANUARY 25, NOYAN TAPAN. The RA ministry of environmental
protection together with the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) is implementing
a project on creation of specailly protected areas in Ashotsk region
with the assistance of KfW bank (Germany). During the January 25
event dedicated to the start of this project, the RA minister of
environmental protection Aram Harutyunian stated that the project's
aim is to preserve the unique biodiversity of Javakhk-Shirak Plateau
on the Armenian-Georgian border by creating "Arpi Lich" national
park. In his words, the 2.2 million-euro project to be implemented
in a three-year period will create new opportunities for developing
summer and winter tourism in the region. The project implementation
office has been set up in Gyumri.

Javakhk-Shirak section is located on a plateau of volcanic origin. It
is unique in the Caucasian ecoregion by its mountainous steppes,
alpine meadows, lakes and damp areas. There are more than 140 bird
species here, 80-85 of which build their nests in this area.

It was stated that KfW is financing a project implemented near the
Georgian border, with the WWF being advisor. A special Transborder
    Coordinating Council will be created.
