U.S. ANXIOUS ABOUT REPORTS ON PROBLEMS THAT EMERGED IN RA PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS

    Feb 21, 2008

YEREVAN, FEBRUARY 21, NOYAN TAPAN. The United States is anxious about
the reports on the problems, which emerged during the calculation of
votes in the presidential elections of Armenia. According to Radio
Liberty, Edgar Waskes, the Spokesperson of the U.S. State Department,
    stated this on February 20.

"We are still studying different reports on the holding of the
presidential elections we have received," he said.

Mentioning that according to the interim report of the OSCE/ODIHR
observation mission, the elections were considered as mostly
corresponding to the international standards, the State Department
Spokesperson at the same time added: "We are anxious about some
elements of the report, including characterization of counting of
votes in 15% polling stations under observation as "bad" or "very bad."

    E. Waskes also called the Armenian opposition and authorities
for keeping the peaceful character of the actions of protest: "We
understand that opposition's actions of protest are being held with
the participation of many people. We welcome the authorities and the
opposition for ensuring calm and peaceful holding of these rallies. We
call all sides for keeping peaceful situation and keeping away from
    illegal or forcible actions."
