"NATIONAL MOVEMENT HELD ON LIBERTY SQUARE ESSENTIALLY APPROACHES KARABAKH MOVEMENT," HISTORIAN ALEXAN HAKOBIAN SAYS

    Feb 29 2008

YEREVAN, FEBRUARY 29, NOYAN TAPAN. Since 1988 the Karabakh movement
has solved two main issues: the liberation of Artsakh, which became
possible due to the national movement, and the acquisition of the
independence of Armenia. This statement was made by historian Alexan
Hakobian, a member of the Karabakh Committee, at the press conference,
which was held on February 29. According to him, today, the national
movement being held on the Liberty square "is essentially approaching
    the Karabakh movement."

Drawing parallels between the events of 1988 and today, Alexan Hakobian
mentioned that everything was done within the limits of the law in
those years and they are doing their best for this national movement
to also proceed by way of law. "If certain part of people claims that
there have been electoral violations, they should be settled by the
order defined by law. In this case, the international community is a
court for us. The people secured the movement's becoming a subject for
discussion for the international community," Alexan Hakobian mentioned.

In his estimation, if the leaders of a few countries congratulated the
newly-elected President after the RA presidential elections, after the
national movement those congratulations stopped. "And the verdict of
the international community, the recognition of the states will be
only after the final declaration of the results of the elections,"
    Alexan Hakobian stressed.

Speaking about the relations of Armenia with Azerbaijan and Turkey, the
historian mentioned that irrespective of the preconditions put forward
by them, essential changes can be achieved in the relations with the
two countries due to the good work of the Armenian authorities.
