EXTERNAL REACTION TO SITUATION IN ARMENIA NOT OF VITAL IMPORTANCE

YEREVAN, February 29. /ARKA/. The world's reaction to the political
developments in Armenia cannot exert any essential influence on the
situation in the country, Director of the Caucasian Institute of Mass
Media Alexander Iskandaryan told reporters in Yerevan.
"The developments in Armenia may slightly influence the international
organizations' appraisal of the presidential election in Armenia,
but the situation itself will be dealt with inside Armenia,"
Iskandaryan said.
Speaking at an opposition-organized rally yesterday, Armenia's
ex-president Levon Ter-Petrosyan stated that "the West and
international organizations have ten days to decide what Armenia they
want to see - a democratic or medieval country."
In this context, Iskandaryan pointed out that international
organizations do not often yield to ultimatums and are not inclined
to change their decisions.
These organizations never acknowledge their own ignorance, Iskandaryan
said.
The February 19 presidential election in Armenia received positive
appraisals by CIS and European observers.
The observers pointed out the necessity for eliminating the
shortcomings.
The RA Central Electoral Commission (CEC) officially reported that
RA Prime Minister Serge Sargsyan won the election by receiving 52%
of votes. His principal rival, Levon Ter-Petrosyan, received 21.5%
of votes.
