NO NEED TO HURRY TO RECOGNIZE KOSOVO INDEPENDENCE, POLITICAL SCIENTIST SAYS

    ARKA
    Feb 29 2008

YEREVAN, February 29. /ARKA/. Armenia should not hurry to recognize the
independence of Kosovo, according to Gagik Keryan, political scientist.

"At first sight, it seems that Armenia has much to gain from the
recognition of Kosovo's independence. However, we must take into
account Russia's stand on the issue," he said.

Keryan believes Armenia will foment a conflict with Russia in case of
recognizing Kosovo. No parallels should be drawn between the Karabakh
conflict and Kosovo issue, according to the political scientist.

"Kosovo's population is two million, and disregard of their opinion
may cause an explosive situation," Keryan was quoted as saying.

He believes Karabakh with its population of about 150,000 cannot have
such public response as the Kosovo issue.

On February 17, Kosovo's Parliament declared the state's
independence. Serbia refuses to recognize Kosovo's independence,
calling the declaration a one-sided break-up of the country.

The Karabakh conflict broke out in 1988 when Nagorno Karabakh, mainly
populated by Armenians, declared its independence from Azerbaijan.
