Armenian Police argues that the force actions were provoked by the actions
    of Ter-Petrosian's supporters

    March 1, 2008

Yerevan /Mediamax/. Armenian Police made a statement today in
connection with the dispersal of the rally of Ter-Petrosian's
supporters, which reads that the decision to use force was made
taking into account the operative information, according to which
the participants of the rally were collecting in large quantities
fire-arms, explosives and grenades aiming at stirring up on March 1
provocations and mass disturbances in the capital city.

Mediamax reports that the statement of the Police reads that,
aiming at confiscation of the above-mentioned arms, the employees
of the law-enforcement bodies urged the rally participants to give
them opportunity of inspection, which was followed by an unexpected
attack on the policemen by the participants of the protest action.

According to the Police, the rally participants were throwing stones,
bottles with ignition compounds and metal sticks at the law-enforcement
employees and called for forcedly overthrowing the power.

"Basing on the situation present, decision was made to use
corresponding measures against the disturbers", the statement of the
Police reads. According to the given statement, the rally participants
started to demonstrate fierce resistance to the law and order forces,
as a result of which there are injured among the policemen.

Some organizers and participants of the disturbances are arrested. A
criminal case is initiated. There are people detained.

The press service of the Police informed that during the inspection,
a large quantity of fire-arms, explosives and psychotropic substances
were found at the Freedom Square.

Near the office of the oppositional "Republic" party, a car is found,
in which a large number of metal sticks and wooden batons were kept.
The Police are searching for the driver of the car.

"The Armenian Police assures that the situation in the capital is
fully under control and everything is being done to soon find and
bring to account the organizers of the disturbances, as well as to
eliminate the consequences", the statement reads.
