  • President-elect for settlement of NK on `reasonable' compromises

Elected Armenian President is for settlement of Nagorno-Karabakh
    problem, basing on `reasonable' compromises

    March 7, 2008

Yerevan /Mediamax/. Armenian President-Elect Serzh Sarkisian stated
that Nagorno-Karabakh problem is to be settled, basing on `reasonable'
    compromises.

Mediamax reports that Serzh Sarkisian said this in an interview,
    published in `Rossiyskaya Gazeta' today.

`My stance on Nagorno-Karabakh conflict settlement is well known for
already 15 years. I spoke about my understanding of the problem during
the pre-election campaign as well. The electors' votes, which I gained,
prove that the Armenian society approved of my approaches to the
settlement of the conflict. I believe that Azerbaijan should recognize
the right of Nagorno-Karabakhi people for self-determination, and
Armenia should recognize the right of Azerbaijan for territorial
integrity. At first glance, these things are incompatible, but only at
first glance. And basing on this very fact, understanding the problems
of each other, we can find reasonable compromise', the President-Elect
    stated.

`We do not consider Kosovo a precedent for the settlement of the
Karabakh conflict, since we are sure that each conflict has its roots,
its development dynamics and its ways of settlement. But each time,
when somewhere in the world the right of people for self-determination
is realized, we welcome that fact', Serzh Sarkisian stated.
