SEYRAN OHANIAN APPOINTED AS RA DEFENSE MINISTER

YEREVAN, 15.04.08. DE FACTO. According to the decree the RA President
Serge Sargsian signed on April 14, General-Colonel Seyran Ohanian
has been appointed the Defense Minister of the Republic of Armenia.
Earlier, according to the RA President's decree, General-Colonel
Seyran Ohanian was dismissed from the post of the head of the General
Headquarters of the RA Armed Forces, the RA first deputy Defense
Minister.
A BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE: Seyran Ohanian was born on July 1, 1962, in the
town of Shoushi, Nagorno-Karabakh. He left the secondary school of
the village of Mrgashen, the Nairi region of Armenian SSR, then Baku
Higher Military Command School. In 1983 he was sent to the Group of
the Soviet Troops to Germany to do his military service. In July of
1988 he was moved to Transcaucasian Military District and assigned
to a post of Commander of the Moto-Rifle Company of the 366th Guards
Moto-Rifle Regiment dislocated in the city of Stepanakert.
In August of 1989 he was appointed Deputy Commander of moto-rifle
battalion of the same regiment; in September of 1990 - Commander of
Moto-Rifle Battalion.
In April of 1992, after moto-rifle regiment's withdrawal
from Stepanakert, Seyran Ohanian continued his service at the
Nagorno-Karabakh Republic Defense Army.
He participated in military operations in the course of the
Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. In September of 1992 Seyran Ohanian was
heavily injured on the approaches to the village of Tchldran of the
Nagorno-Karabakh Republic Martakert region.
In December of 1992 Seyran Ohanian was designated to a post of the
head of the headquarters of the NKR Self-Defense Committee. Since
September of 1994 till October of 1998 he held the post of the First
Deputy Commander of the NKR Defense Army. According to the decree of
the Nagorno-Karabakh President, in August of 1999 he was appointed the
NKR Defense Minister; in January of 2000 - the NKR Defense Minister -
Commander of the NKR Defense Army.
According to the RA President's decree signed on May 11, 2007, Seyran
Ohanian was appointed the head of the General Headquarters of the RA
Armed Forces - the RA First Deputy Defense Minister.
In 1995 Seyran Ohanian was conferred a military title of General
Mayor, in March of 2000 - General Lieutenant, in May of 2007 - General
Colonel. He has been awarded the RA Fighting Cross Order of the 1st
degree and Tigran Mets Order. In 1999 he was conferred the title of
Artsakh's Hero and presented with the Golden Eagle Order. He was
awarded the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic Fighting Cross Order of the
1st degree and a medal For the Liberation of Shoushi.
Seyran Ohanian is married, he has 3 sons..
