    BRITISH FILMS FAIL TO MAKE CANNES FESTIVAL LINEUP

    Veteran directors Clint Eastwood, Steven Soderbergh and Wim Wenders
    will face up-and-coming filmmakers in the battle for the coveted
    Palme d'Or at this year's Cannes film festival.

    films from Belgium, Turkey, France, Argentina, Brazil and Italy -
    but not one from Britain.

    Organisers announced the 19-strong list in Paris Organisers announced

    directors are currently working on new movies. A 20th film from France
    is to be announced in the next few days.

    Eastwood's The Changeling is a thriller set in the 1920s starring
    Angelina Jolie. Soderbergh's Che tells the story of Ernesto "Che"
    Guevara.

    Wenders' Palermo Shooting, starring Milla Jovovich and Dennis Hopper,
    follows a German photographer who travels to Palermo to escape
    his past.

    Among other directors vying for the Palme d'Or are Canada's
    Armenian-born Atom Egoyan, Brazil's Walter Salles, China's Jia Zhangke,
    Israeli Ari Folman, Pablo Trapero of Argentina and Nuri Bilge Ceylan
    of Turkey.

    advertisementThe jury will be headed by American actor turned
    director Sean Penn and includes American actress Natalie Portman,
    Mexican director Alfonso Cuaron, French director Rachid Bouchareb
    and Italian actor and director Sergio Castellitto.

    Penn said: "The Cannes Film Festival has long been the epicentre in
    the discovery of new waves of filmmakers.

    "I very much look forward to participating."

    Last year's Palme d'Or went to the harrowing Romanian drama 4 Months,
    3 Weeks and 2 Days - a wrenching story about a girl's illegal,
    backstreet abortion in communist-era Bucharest.

    Screening out of competition will be the latest works from top-name
    directors Woody Allen and Steven Spielberg.

    Spielberg will be bringing the year's most-awaited movie, Indiana
    Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull - the fourth installment
    in the series starring Harrison Ford as the archaeologist adventurer.

    Woody Allen, a longstanding favourite at Cannes, brings Vicky Cristina
    Barcelona starring Penelope Cruz, Scarlett Johansson and Javier Bardem.

    The festival takes place from May 14 to May 25.
