    FOOTBALL: ARMENIA TO PLAY TURKEY

    Merinews
    Sept 5 2008
    India

On September 6, 2008, Armenia and Turkey will play their 2010 World Cup
Qualifiers in Armenia. Turkish President Abdullah Gul would be watching
the games in Armenia to prove that sports are superior to politics..

    CJ: Roberto Carlos Alvarez-galloso ,

Turkey and Armenia are at the crossroads of history with the upcoming
2010 World Cup Classification Games between the two countries to be
held in Armenia. It is well known that Russia and Turkey use Armenia
in their tug of war and that Armenia was a victim of genocide on
the part of Turkey and Russia. The charge of genocide is denied by
Turkey and Russia. Instead of concentrating on politics and history,
let us concentrate on the ramifications of the events - the visit of
Turkish President Abdullah Gul to Armenia in spite of objections from
some people in Turkey (and accusing him of treason), Turkish students
seeking opening of the border between Turkey and Armenia so people
can watch the games and a minister, Kiro Minoyan {head of the Armenian
Revolutionary Federation (ARF) Bureau's Hay Dat and Political Affairs
Office)} who stated that the 'Turkish/Armenian border will open soon
although it will not resolve anything'. I wrote this article when I
read the web pages of the BBC and Public Radio of Armenia.

While there are elements who want to unite politics and sports, they
seem to have forgotten that politics and sports do not mix. Many of
the people who unite politics and sports seem to forget that sport
is thicker and more powerful than politics. There are people who seem
to forget that people are tired of the same old and clichéd politics
and just want to enjoy the historic 2010 World Cup Classifying Games
between Turkey and Armenia. The reason for watching this historic
game arises from the desire to become a part of history and enjoy a
game of football in the process. People have a right to follow the
revolution initiated by the 2008 Beijing Olympics of 'One World One
People' as well as 'Forever Friends'. People have a right to enjoy
a football game without the sceptre of war, hate, fear and prejudice.

I personally applaud the decision of Turkish President Abdullah Gul
in defying the negative people and going to Armenia to watch the 2010
World Cup Qualifier between his country and Armenia in Armenia.

I also applaud the courage of the Turkish students who have sought
opening of the border between the Republic of Armenia and the Republic
of Turkey so people can enjoy the 2010 World Cup Qualifiers between
the two countries. I also applaud the decision by and comments
of Kiro Minoyan {(who is the head of the Armenian Revolutionary
    Federation (ARF) Bureau's Hay Dat and Political Affairs Office)}
on the possibility of the Turkish/Armenian border being opened for
the 2010 World Cup Qualifiers. The 2010 World Cup Qualifier between
Armenia and Turkey is good news for the region called the Caucasus,
which is suffering on account of war and hatred. I hope that the 2010
World Cup Qualifier between Armenia and Turkey will mark the beginning
of a road to peace regardless of who wins. All I know is at present,
football and sports have won. People of the world say yes to football
    and no to war.
