AZERBAIJAN TAKES WAIT-AND-SEE POSITION ON TURKISH VISIT TO ARMENIA

A senior Azerbaijani official has urged a wait-and-see position on
Turkish President Abdullah Gul's visit to Armenia on 6 September to
watch a football game between the Armenian and Turkish national teams.

In an interview with APA news agency on 6 September, the director of
the international relations department at the Azerbaijani presidential
administration, Novruz Mammadov, said that it would take two or three
months before anything definite could be said about the outcome of the
    visit.

"I believe that it is not quite correct today to put forward a
definite, radical and concrete position. This is a sensitive step. We
have to wait," APA quoted Mammadov as saying. "This is a tactical
move. I believe that there is a common strategic goal and target
between Azerbaijan and Turkey and that this will continue to be so."

Mammadov went on to say that the visit would not result in the opening
of borders between Turkey and Armenia.

"This visit does not mean that Turkey will open borders with
Armenia. Probably, all problems between the countries will be
discussed during the visit. We can say something about the visit after
we know details of these discussions. For the time being, our position
is that this is Turkey's decision and we accept it," Mammadov said.
